It is with sadness that we convey the news of Br Terry’s death on 18 September.
The funeral was held on Wednesday, 2 October at 11am; Vigil on 1 October at 7pm, both in the monastery chapel.
Br Terence Kavenagh OSB was born in Sydney in 1946, educated at De La Salle College, Ashfield and the University of Sydney, graduating in 1968 with an honours degree in history.
After working, including teaching for five years, he joined St Benedict’s Monastery, Arcadia, a monastery of the Sylvestrine Benedictine Congregation, in 1977. He was professed as a monk in 1979 and took solemn vows in 1984.
Over the years Terry carried out most of the roles in the monastery, being especially known as guest-master. His interests in history covered three main areas: Benedictines in nineteenth century Sydney; the Sylvestrine Benedictines in Sydney from 1949; the monks and monasteries of the Sylvestrine Congregation OSB in Central Italy in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
He wrote many article on these topics, especially in Tjurunga: an Australasian Benedictine Review and Inter Fratres, a review published by the Sylvestrines.
Over the past couple of years he suffered a number of mini-strokes and this year entered Grace Gardens nursing facility at Dural where he died. May he rest in peace.
