New beginnings at Mount St Benedict
Mayombe is located in the west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It lies on the right bank of the Congo River (the world’s second largest) just before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean.
This major project which, has matured in recent years, had its happy beginning with the initial arrival of five young men from Congo Brazzaville.
Some have already completed their theological formation with basic studies and specializations, some were ordained priests, the others had taken vows and were still attending their courses in theology.
In June 1999, the Prior and the Vice Prior of our community travelled to this country and assisted by Bishop Jean Claude Makaya Loemba, Bishop of Pointe Noire bought 5 acres of land, on a hill north of the city that has now taken on the name of Mount St. Benedict.

From the chosen location this site offers a splendid panorama of the city to the sea and is undoubtedly the most beautiful place in the whole area.
On this mountain, we fervently hope to establish and build our monastery in order to become a center of spirituality, a place of prayer and training for future monks and all the clergy of the diocese.
It is also our desire to annex to the monastery a health post and a diagnostic center for the prevention and treatment of diseases that threaten the health of the local people and often kills them.
